Case Study - The New Manager

Finding a process to identify the Gap!
All of this led Rawinia to decide that she needed to obtain clarity on what was going on in her relationship with her manager and so she decided to try the Better Life Toolkit Questionnaires. This proved to be a very effective tool in helping her understand what she needed to do to make the relationship work.

What were her key learning points?
  • Her self-perception feedback indicated that she tended to work with a very high Yellow style preference that indicated she preferred adaptable relationships with measured results.
  • She was able to determine that her managers preferences indicated a high Blue style that was more about disciplined relationships with quick results.
  • From the analysis she identified some strategies on what she could do differently when interacting with her manager. She realised that it was important to keep her social chat to a minimum, to be more formal, to be more structured, to keep focused on the goal and be prepared to act more quickly.
  • She learned that there were no rights or wrongs in the feedback because it is relative to how she and others perceive their own worlds, and those they relate to in each situation they encounter.
  • She also learned that as her colleagues interacted with her, she was better informed and could sense if they were more or less Task and more or less Relationship oriented than she was and therefore could modify her behaviour for each person in a way that met their needs more effectively. This helped her to appreciate the similarities and differences to make the most of each interaction she had.
